Raven ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’)
Overview
- Glossy, nearly black foliage with sculptural form
- Exceptionally tolerant of low light and irregular watering
- Slow-growing and highly durable
Raven ZZ Plant is a striking cultivar of the classic ZZ, distinguished by its deep, inky foliage that emerges bright green and gradually darkens to near black. Its upright, architectural growth and remarkable resilience make it a favorite for modern interiors and minimalist spaces.
Origins
Derived from Zamioculcas zamiifolia, a species native to eastern Africa, where it grows in dry, rocky environments and stores moisture in thick rhizomes.
Light Requirements
- Prefers bright to medium indirect light
- Tolerates low light exceptionally well
- Avoid prolonged direct sun
Watering
- Allow soil to dry almost completely between waterings
- Overwatering is the most common cause of failure
- Reduce watering significantly in winter
Humidity
Thrives in average household humidity and does not require supplemental moisture.
Temperature
- Ideal range: 65–85°F
- Avoid temperatures below 60°F
Soil
Aroid Mix. A fast-draining mix helps prevent excess moisture around the rhizomes.
Fertilizer
Feed sparingly—once every 2–3 months during spring and summer—with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter.
Preferred Growing Method
Potted display. Raven ZZ is self-supporting and does not require a pole or climbing structure.
Final Notes
Raven ZZ Plant combines dramatic color with near-effortless care. Its ability to tolerate low light and infrequent watering makes it an ideal choice for clients seeking bold foliage with minimal maintenance.
