Potted Staghorn Fern (Platycerium spp.)

Overview

  • Unique fern with antler-shaped fronds, perfect as a sculptural indoor plant
  • Epiphytic species that can be grown mounted or in a pot with well-draining medium
  • Thrives with high humidity and bright, indirect light

Potted Staghorn Fern brings architectural interest to any space. Unlike traditional ferns, it produces both basal shield fronds and elongated, antler-like fronds that create an intriguing layered effect. While commonly mounted, these ferns adapt well to being potted with the right soil and care.

Origins

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Australia, and Southeast Asia, staghorn ferns naturally grow as epiphytes on trees in shaded, humid forests.

Light Requirements

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal
  • Too much direct sun may scorch fronds
  • Moderate shade is tolerated, but growth may slow

Watering

  • Water when the top inch of soil feels dry
  • Allow the pot to drain completely—avoid standing water
  • For mounted ferns in a pot, occasionally soak the root ball thoroughly, then allow to dry

Humidity

Prefers 60–80% humidity. Mist regularly or use a pebble tray to maintain moisture in the air, especially in drier indoor conditions.

Soil

Aroid Mix. A light, chunky mix with excellent drainage and aeration, mimicking the epiphytic conditions of its natural environment.

Fertilizer

Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.

Preferred Growing Method

Potted display. While staghorn ferns are often mounted, they thrive in a well-draining pot as long as the root system is not waterlogged. Position to highlight the fronds’ unique antler shape.

Final Notes

Potted Staghorn Fern is a statement plant that blends tropical elegance with sculptural interest. With proper light, humidity, and watering, it becomes a long-lasting centerpiece in any indoor plant collection.
