Philodendron joepii

Overview

  • Rare and highly unusual Philodendron with distinctive, lobed leaves
  • Discovered in the wild by Dutch botanist Joep Moonen in French Guiana
  • Long, slender central leaf blade with exaggerated “ears” at the top
  • A collector’s plant that thrives with climbing support

Philodendron joepii is one of the most unique and intriguing Philodendrons, beloved for its odd, almost alien-shaped foliage. With long, tapering leaves that flare dramatically at the top, it’s a conversation piece in any collection. Rare and slow to propagate, this plant is highly prized among serious aroid enthusiasts.

Origins

Native to the rainforests of French Guiana, where it was first identified by Joep Moonen. Like many Philodendrons, it grows as a climbing epiphyte in warm, humid forest understories.

Light Requirements

  • Thrives in bright, indirect light
  • Can tolerate medium light but with slower growth
  • Avoid direct sun, which can scorch its delicate foliage

Watering

  • Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings
  • Water thoroughly and let excess drain away
  • Less frequent watering needed in cooler months

Humidity

Requires high humidity (60–80%). Will benefit from a humidifier or greenhouse environment to maintain lush, healthy growth.

Soil

Aroid Mix. A loose, chunky, well-draining blend with organic matter, bark, and perlite helps mimic its natural epiphytic habitat.

Fertilizer

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Hold back during fall and winter when growth slows.

Preferred Growing Method

Moss Pole or Plank. Philodendron joepii prefers to climb. Providing vertical support encourages larger, more dramatic leaves as it matures.

Final Notes

Philodendron joepii is a rare, extraordinary plant with an unmistakable leaf shape. Best suited to dedicated collectors, it offers both a challenge and a reward: a one-of-a-kind foliage display unlike any other in the plant world.
