Maranta leuconeura (Prayer Plant)
Overview
- Low-growing foliage plant known for its patterned leaves that fold at night
- Compact habit—great for tabletops, shelves, and terrariums
- Prefers bright, indirect light, steady moisture, and high humidity
Maranta leuconeura, commonly called the Prayer Plant, is celebrated for its vivid leaf patterning and daily leaf movement (nyctinasty). It offers tactile, lively greenery that performs beautifully in shaded, humid interiors when given consistent care.
Origins
Native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, where it grows on the forest floor beneath filtered canopy light and consistently humid conditions.
Light Requirements
- Bright, indirect light is ideal
- Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch and fade leaf patterns
- Tolerates lower light but growth and pattern intensity may slow
Watering
- Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged
- Allow the top ½ inch of soil to dry before watering again
- Use filtered or rainwater when possible—sensitive to salts and chlorine
Humidity
High humidity (60–80%) keeps leaves supple and prevents browning. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or grouping to raise local humidity.
Soil
Aroid Mix. A light, airy blend that retains moisture while providing excellent drainage is ideal for healthy roots.
Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
Preferred Growing Method
Potted display. Maranta leuconeura is best grown in a pot where its spreading, low habit can be enjoyed up close. Rotate periodically for even growth.
Final Notes
Maranta leuconeura rewards steady moisture, warm temperatures, and high humidity with dramatic leaf patterning and gentle nightly movement—making it a calm, living accent for any indoor space.
