Frosty Fern

Overview

  • Delicate, fern-like foliage with soft white-tipped growth
  • Not a true fern—botanically a Selaginella
  • Thrives with consistent moisture and higher humidity

Frosty Fern is a refined, textural plant prized for its lacy green foliage dusted with silvery-white tips. Often associated with winter décor, it’s equally well-suited to year-round indoor cultivation when its preference for moisture and humidity is respected.

Origins

A cultivated form of Selaginella kraussiana, native to tropical regions of Africa where it grows as a low, spreading groundcover in consistently moist, shaded environments.

Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light
  • Tolerates medium light well
  • Avoid direct sun, which can scorch fine foliage

Watering

  • Keep soil consistently moist at all times
  • Do not allow the soil to dry out completely
  • Water gently and evenly to avoid disturbing shallow roots

Humidity

Requires high humidity to look its best. Ideal for bathrooms, terrariums, or areas with a humidifier. Dry air will cause browning and crisping.

Temperature

  • Ideal range: 60–75°F
  • Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes

Soil

Aroid Mix. While finer-textured plants often prefer denser substrates, an airy mix works well when kept consistently moist and not allowed to dry out.

Fertilizer

Feed lightly every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Overfeeding can damage delicate foliage.

Preferred Growing Method

Potted display. Frosty fern remains low and spreading, making it ideal for tabletop planters or grouped arrangements. It does not climb or trail.

Frosty Fern rewards attentive care with soft texture and subtle contrast. When given steady moisture, gentle light, and elevated humidity, it becomes an elegant accent plant with a quiet, composed presence.
