Cyclamen Care Guide
Overview
- Cool-loving plant known for its elegant swept-back blooms and patterned leaves
- Often grown as a winter houseplant due to its unique seasonal growth cycle
- Requires specific watering habits and cooler temperatures to thrive
Cyclamen is a stunning plant celebrated for its delicate, butterfly-like flowers and beautifully marbled foliage. Unlike most houseplants, cyclamen prefer cooler temperatures and follow a distinctive growth pattern that includes a summer dormancy. With the right approach, they can bloom reliably every year.
Origins
Native to the Mediterranean region, parts of Europe, and Western Asia. Cyclamen naturally grow in cool, shaded woodlands where moisture is balanced and temperatures stay mild.
Light Requirements
- Prefers bright, indirect light
- Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch leaves
- Low to medium light will reduce flowering
Watering
- Keep soil evenly moist during the active growing and blooming season (fall–spring)
- Water from the bottom if possible—this helps prevent crown rot
- Avoid splashing water on leaves or the center of the plant
- During summer dormancy, water very sparingly—just enough to keep the tuber from completely drying out
Humidity
Does well in normal indoor humidity. Avoid misting, which can encourage fungal issues.
Temperature
- Thrives in cool temperatures between 50–65°F
- Struggles in warm rooms—heat is the most common cause of decline
- Avoid placing near vents, heaters, fireplaces, or sunny windowsills
Soil
Aroid Mix. While not an aroid, cyclamen benefit from a light, airy mix that allows excess moisture to drain freely to prevent rot.
Fertilizer
- Feed every 2–3 weeks during active growth with a diluted balanced fertilizer
- Stop fertilizing entirely during dormancy
Understanding the Growth Cycle
Cyclamen follow a reverse schedule compared to most tropical houseplants:
- Fall–Spring: Active growth and blooming
- Summer: Dormant — leaves yellow and die back
This dormancy is normal. Allow the plant to rest in a cool, dry location until new growth begins returning in fall.
Final Notes
With their graceful flowers and striking foliage, cyclamen make a stunning seasonal addition to your indoor garden. Respect their need for cool temperatures and careful watering, and they’ll reward you with beautiful blooms year after year.
