Variegated String of Hearts Care

Variegated String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii variegata)

Variegated String of Hearts is delicate without being fragile—thin trailing vines lined with small heart-shaped leaves brushed in silver, cream, and soft pink. It’s lightweight, fast-growing, and especially striking when allowed to cascade naturally from a shelf or hanging planter.

Origin

Derived from Ceropegia woodii, native to Southern Africa, where it grows in warm, dry environments and trails across rocky terrain.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Strong lighting helps maintain variegation and encourages compact growth.

It can tolerate a few hours of gentle direct sun, which may intensify pink tones.

Water

Allow the soil to dry out significantly between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain away.

The small tubers along the vines store water, making this plant more tolerant of underwatering than overwatering.

Humidity

Average household humidity is sufficient. Does not require elevated humidity.

Temperature

Thrives between 60–80°F. Protect from frost and prolonged cold exposure.

Soil

Aroid Mix

Fertilizer

Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.

Growth Habit

Trailing and vining with thin cascading stems that can grow several feet long over time.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing or mushy vines: Usually caused by overwatering.
  • Long gaps between leaves: Typically a sign of insufficient light.
  • Fading variegation: Often linked to lower light conditions.
  • Crispy vines: Can result from extended drought or excessive direct sun.

Pet Safety

Non-toxic.
