Tillandsia Cyanea Care

Tillandsia cyanea (Pink Quill Plant)

Overview

  • Arching green foliage with a distinctive flat pink bract (“quill”)
  • Produces short-lived purple flowers from the bract
  • Compact, sculptural plant with a tropical feel

Tillandsia cyanea is one of the few air plants commonly grown in soil. Its signature pink bract provides long-lasting color, while its soft, grassy foliage creates a clean, understated presence that fits easily into modern interiors.

Origins

Native to Ecuador, where Tillandsia cyanea grows in warm, humid forest environments, often as an epiphyte attached to trees.

Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light
  • Can tolerate gentle morning sun
  • Low light may prevent blooming and reduce color vibrancy

Watering

  • Water when the top inch of soil begins to dry
  • Keep soil lightly moist but never soggy
  • Avoid letting water sit in the center of the plant for extended periods

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity. Benefits from occasional misting, especially in dry indoor environments.

Temperature

  • Ideal range: 65–80°F
  • Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F

Soil

Aroid Mix. A loose, well-draining mix supports airflow around the roots while preventing excess moisture retention.

Fertilizer

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted bromeliad or balanced houseplant fertilizer. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.

Preferred Growing Method

Potted display. Unlike most air plants, this species is best grown in a container with drainage.

Final Notes

Tillandsia cyanea blooms once, with its pink bract lasting for several months. After flowering, the mother plant will gradually decline while producing offsets (“pups”), which can be left to form a cluster or separated and grown individually.
