Sanseveria 'Whale Fin' Variegata Care

Sansevieria ‘Whale Fin Variegata’ (Dracaena masoniana variegata)

Whale Fin is already striking—broad, paddle-shaped leaves with a heavy, architectural presence. The variegated form takes it further, adding soft marbling and creamy striping that makes each plant feel one-of-one. It’s slow-growing, sculptural, and built to last.

Origin

Native to Central Africa, specifically regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It naturally grows in dry, rocky environments. Sansevieria has since been reclassified under the Dracaena genus but is still commonly referred to by its original name.

Light

Adaptable, but thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, though growth will be slower and variegation may be less pronounced.

Can handle some direct sun, especially indoors, but avoid harsh, prolonged exposure.

Water

Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain. Overwatering is the most common issue and can quickly lead to rot.

During winter, reduce watering frequency significantly.

Humidity

Average household humidity is more than sufficient. Does not require elevated humidity.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65–85°F. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 50°F.

Soil

Aroid Mix

Fertilizer

Feed sparingly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. This plant does not require frequent feeding.

Growth Habit

Upright and extremely slow-growing. Often produces a single large leaf at a time, with new growth emerging gradually from the base.

Common Issues

  • Soft or mushy base: Almost always caused by overwatering.
  • Wrinkling or curling: Indicates the plant is too dry and needs water.
  • Loss of variegation: Can occur in very low light conditions.
  • Stalled growth: Normal—this is a slow plant by nature.

Pet Safety

Toxic if ingested.
