Rex Begonia (Begonia rex-cultorum)

Rex Begonias are grown for one thing: foliage. Metallic swirls, deep veining, and dramatic color shifts make them one of the most visually striking plants you can own. They’re not difficult, but they are particular—once you understand their rhythm, they’re incredibly rewarding.

Origin

Rex Begonias are cultivated hybrids derived primarily from species native to parts of Northeast India, Southern China, and Vietnam. They naturally grow in shaded, humid forest floors with consistent moisture and airflow.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. They can tolerate medium light, but colors will fade and growth may slow. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the thin leaves quickly.

Water

Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but never soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Rex Begonias are sensitive to overwatering and prone to rot if they stay too wet.

Try to water the soil directly and avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can lead to spotting or mildew.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity. While they appreciate humidity, avoid misting the leaves directly. A humidifier or grouping plants together works better and keeps foliage looking clean.

Temperature

Thrives in typical indoor temperatures between 65–75°F. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature swings, which can cause stress or leaf drop.

Feed lightly during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. They are not heavy feeders.

Growth Habit

Low-growing and mounding. Rex Begonias spread outward rather than climbing, making them ideal for tabletops, shelves, and decorative containers.

Common Issues

• Crispy edges: Usually caused by low humidity or inconsistent watering.
• Yellowing leaves: Often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.
• Powdery mildew: Can occur in stagnant air—improve airflow and avoid wet leaves.
• Leaf loss after purchase: Normal adjustment to a new environment. Give it time to stabilize.
