Philodendron Sun Red Care

Philodendron ‘Sun Red’

Philodendron ‘Sun Red’ earns its name from its new growth. Fresh leaves emerge in vibrant shades of red, orange, and copper before gradually deepening into rich green as they mature. With multiple colors often present at once, it delivers constant visual interest throughout the growing season.

Origin

Philodendron ‘Sun Red’ is a cultivated hybrid developed from tropical philodendron species native to South America. Like its relatives, it is adapted to warm, humid rainforest conditions.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Strong light encourages vibrant coloration and compact growth.

Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Water

Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain away.

It prefers evenly moist soil but should never remain saturated.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity. While it adapts well to average household conditions, increased humidity can support larger leaves and more vigorous growth.

Temperature

Thrives between 65–85°F. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F.

Soil

Aroid Mix

Fertilizer

Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.

Growth Habit

Self-heading and upright. Unlike vining philodendrons, ‘Sun Red’ grows from a central stem and develops a full, bushy appearance over time.

Common Issues

  • Dull new growth color: Usually caused by insufficient light.
  • Yellowing leaves: Often linked to overwatering.
  • Brown leaf edges: Can result from low humidity or inconsistent watering.
  • Slow growth: Common in cooler temperatures or lower light conditions.

Pet Safety

Toxic if ingested.
