Monstera standleyana offers a different look from the iconic split-leaf Monsteras. Its long, glossy leaves are accented with cream or white variegation, creating a clean, elegant appearance. Despite its name, it rarely develops the fenestrations associated with other Monstera species, making it a unique addition to any collection.

Origin

Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, including Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador. It naturally grows as a climbing vine, using trees for support as it reaches toward the canopy.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Strong light helps maintain healthy variegation and encourages compact growth.

Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can scorch the lighter portions of the leaves.

Water

Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain away.

It prefers evenly moist soil but should never remain soggy.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity. While it adapts well to average household conditions, increased humidity supports larger foliage and stronger growth.

Temperature

Thrives between 65–85°F. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F.

Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.

Moss Pole Support

Monstera standleyana is a natural climber and benefits greatly from a moss pole or plank. Vertical support encourages larger, more mature leaves and a fuller growth habit.

Secure the vine gently as it grows and keep the support slightly moist to encourage aerial roots to attach.

Growth Habit

Vining and climbing. Without support it will trail, but climbing produces stronger growth and larger foliage over time.

Common Issues

  • Leggy growth: Usually caused by insufficient light.
  • Yellowing leaves: Often the result of overwatering.
  • Brown edges on variegation: Can occur with low humidity or inconsistent watering.
  • Small leaves: Common when grown without vertical support.
