Jade Plant Care

Jade Plant (Crassula ovata)

Jade Plant is simple, structured, and built for longevity. Thick stems and glossy succulent leaves give it a clean, tree-like form over time. It’s one of the easiest houseplants to maintain and can live for decades with minimal intervention.

Origin

Native to South Africa and Mozambique, where it grows in dry, rocky environments with strong sunlight and infrequent rainfall.

Light

Prefers bright light and benefits from several hours of direct sun each day. Strong light helps maintain compact growth and can bring out red edging on the leaves.

In lower light, growth may become stretched and sparse.

Water

Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain away.

Reduce watering significantly during winter months.

Humidity

Average household humidity is ideal. Does not require elevated humidity.

Temperature

Thrives between 60–80°F. Protect from frost and prolonged cold exposure.

Soil

Aroid Mix

Fertilizer

Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Jade Plants do not require frequent feeding.

Growth Habit

Slow-growing and upright. Over time, stems thicken and develop a miniature tree-like appearance.

Common Issues

  • Soft or mushy leaves: Usually caused by overwatering.
  • Wrinkled leaves: Indicates the plant needs water.
  • Leggy growth: Typically caused by insufficient light.
  • Leaf drop: Can occur from sudden environmental changes or watering stress.

Pet Safety

Toxic if ingested.
