Croton 'Petra' Care

Croton ‘Petra’ (Codiaeum variegatum ‘Petra’)

Croton ‘Petra’ doesn't believe in subtlety. Bright green, yellow, orange, and red foliage creates a living splash of color that can rival a flowering plant. When given enough light, few houseplants can match its intensity.

Origin

Crotons are native to Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. In their natural habitat, they grow as tropical shrubs in warm, humid environments with abundant sunlight.

Light

Bright light is essential. Croton ‘Petra’ thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate several hours of direct sun indoors.

Insufficient light often causes colors to fade and leaves to become predominantly green.

Water

Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain away.

Crotons prefer consistent moisture and may drop leaves if allowed to dry out for extended periods.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity. While it can adapt to average indoor conditions, higher humidity supports healthier foliage and reduces leaf drop.

Temperature

Thrives between 65–85°F. Avoid cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 60°F.

Soil

Aroid Mix

Fertilizer

Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.

Growth Habit

Upright and bushy. Over time, it develops into a dense shrub with colorful foliage from top to bottom.

Common Issues

  • Leaf drop: Common after environmental changes, relocation, temperature fluctuations, or watering stress.
  • Faded color: Usually caused by insufficient light.
  • Crispy leaf edges: Often linked to low humidity or inconsistent watering.
  • Yellowing leaves: Can indicate overwatering or poor drainage.

Pet Safety

Toxic if ingested. The sap may also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
