Alocasia 'Green Unicorn' Care

Alocasia ‘Green Unicorn’

Alocasia ‘Green Unicorn’ is all about form—tall, smooth green leaves with a clean silhouette and subtle gloss. It’s less dramatic than some Alocasias, but that’s the appeal. Structured, refined, and easier to integrate into a space without overwhelming it.

Origin

A cultivated Alocasia variety with roots in tropical regions of Southeast Asia. Like other Alocasias, it naturally grows in warm, humid environments with consistent moisture and filtered light.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate medium light, but growth may slow and leaves may become smaller.

Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Water

Keep the soil consistently lightly moist. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings, but do not let it dry out completely.

Alocasias are sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering, so consistency is key.

Humidity

Prefers high humidity. While it can survive in average household conditions, increased humidity will support larger leaves and healthier growth.

Temperature

Thrives between 65–85°F. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil

Aroid Mix

Fertilizer

Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Alocasias benefit from consistent feeding while actively growing.

Growth Habit

Upright and clumping. New leaves emerge from the base, with older leaves naturally declining over time as part of the plant’s growth cycle.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Often caused by overwatering or natural leaf cycling.
  • Drooping: Typically from inconsistent watering or environmental stress.
  • Crispy edges: Usually a sign of low humidity.
  • Leaf loss after purchase: Common as the plant adjusts to a new environment.

Pet Safety

Toxic if ingested.
