Alocasia Frydek Care
Alocasia ‘Frydek’ (Green Velvet Alocasia)
Alocasia Frydek is defined by contrast—deep green, velvety leaves cut with bright white veins. It’s one of the more refined Alocasias, offering dramatic texture without excessive size. When it’s happy, it’s one of the most striking plants in the room.
Origin
A cultivated form of Alocasia micholitziana, native to the Philippines. It naturally grows in warm, humid forest conditions with consistent moisture and filtered light.
Light
Bright, indirect light is essential. Strong lighting supports larger leaves and more defined contrast. Lower light can lead to smaller leaves and slower growth.
Avoid direct sun, which can damage the velvety texture.
Water
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings, but do not let it fully dry out.
Frydek is sensitive to inconsistent watering—both overwatering and underwatering can cause stress.
Humidity
Prefers high humidity. While it can adapt to average indoor conditions, higher humidity helps maintain leaf quality and prevents crisping.
Temperature
Thrives between 65–85°F. Avoid cold drafts and sudden environmental changes.
Soil
Aroid Mix
Fertilizer
Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Regular feeding supports active growth.
Growth Habit
Upright and clumping. Leaves emerge from the base, with older leaves naturally cycling out as new ones develop.
Common Issues
- Leaf drop: Normal during adjustment or environmental changes, but can also indicate stress.
- Yellowing leaves: Often caused by overwatering or natural leaf turnover.
- Crispy edges: Typically due to low humidity.
- Drooping: Usually tied to inconsistent watering.
Pet Safety
Toxic if ingested.
